How to choose a dog for your family

Dogs are wonderful pets, and many people would love to own one. However, there are many different types of dogs. Have you considered what type of dog would be a good fit for you? In order to decide that, you must first examine your own life to see what kind of pup would make a good companion!

Should you get a puppy or an older dog?

Most people want to get puppies, but they may not be the best choice for you. A puppy is a huge commitment. A younger dog requires lots of time, and they are full of energy. That means you’ll need to be able to commit a large chunk of time to training them and playing with them. If you have a family who can help care for them this is easy, but if you’re a single person who is very busy this is harder. Have you considered an older dog instead? Your local shelter has lots of older dogs who need homes that are just as good of pets as a puppy. A dog who’s a few years old will also be much calmer, already trained, and they won’t require quite so much of a time commitment as a younger dog will.

Large or small breed?

While you may love to have an energetic large breed dog, if you live in an apartment this may not be a good fit. These dogs need lots of exercises. If you don’t have a backyard for them they could get very bored unless you’re able to take them on runs several times a day! A less active breed might be a better choice. However, if you enjoy running a dog like this might be great! If you have small children a tiny dog like a chihuahua might not be a good fit. Though they might not mean to, small kids could hurt a dog of this size.

Do you need a family dog?

The truth is that some dogs are better family dogs than others. While chow chows are big and fluffy teddy bears their personalities are not so. They are quick to anger and can quickly become annoyed with children. They’re better suited to adult-only households. A good family dog might be a golden retriever or a black lab.  These dogs are very tolerant, and they are typically great with kids, and even other pets.

Before you ever purchase or adopt and animal you should research their care thoroughly. All dogs are not the same, and they could have some very important individual care aspects. A quick google search can tell you things like what is the best dog food for large breed dogs like great Danes or are dalmatians good with children.
